HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT /LICENSED NURSE DEFINITIONUnder the general supervision of the site administrator and district nurse, and direction of the office manager, the Health Care Assistant/Licensed Nurse will provide specialized physical health care services (SPHCS) for or assist with serving students with medically complex needs. The Health Care Assistant/Licensed Nurse is responsible for planning and administering student health care safely within the scope of the Licensed Nurse Practice Act under the direction of the credentialed school nurse in compliance with physician's orders. This job class assists the assigned school nurse and other staff to meet the specialized physical health care needs of designated students. Employees in this classification receive direct and indirect supervision from the school nurse regarding health-related training. General supervision with a framework of policies and procedures is providedDISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis job classification is intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by an employee assigned to this position. Provides a variety of health related and staff services at an assigned school site?Administers basic first aid and CPR to ill and injured students and determines need for emergency, supervisory or administrative assistance and contacts parents or other personnel as required by the nature of the situation?Consults with district nurse on a regular basis ?Assists students with medications as ordered by physician and according to district guidelines, and maintains students' medication records?Maintains daily log of first aid services to students and student health records ?Maintains and prepares a variety of records, files and reports related to immunizations and student health?Performs a variety of work requiring computer knowledge. (Tasks may include compiling data and preparing reports, checking and recording information, proofreading, and maintaining filing/record systems)?Answers the telephone, routes calls or relays messages ?Supervises children while in health office?Assists with classroom inspections for communicable diseases ?Assists with preparation and arrangements for health screening and testing programs?Maintains health room supplies, ordering, receiving and distributing first aid supplies as needed?Assists students with specialized health needs according to the student's individual health care plan with ongoing training under the technical direction of the district nurse, e.g. use of bathroom facilities, breathing machines, insulin injections, diastat, and glucometer testing, etc?Attends in-service training activities and meetings?Assists students with medications and treatments according to physician orders and under the direction of the credentialed school nurse?Performs gastrostomy tube feedings and oral feedings to designated students requiring strict adherence to clearly defined procedures and instructions?Performs tracheostomy suctioning and other specialized procedures in accordance with medical orders/procedures, clearly defined instructions, and established guidelines?Documents SPHCS procedures, medications, changes regarding student's condition, and responses to procedures on appropriate logs?Reports unusual situations and ongoing changes in the student's condition and/or needs to the credentialed school nurse/site administrator, teacher, and parent as needed?Provides a safe and sanitary environment for the students and follows Universal Precautions at all times?Responds to student medical emergencies, and administers appropriate First Aid/CPR?Assists in physically positioning, transferring, and/or lifting students as required; lifts, turns, and moves students from place to place?Assists with personal hygiene, toileting, and diapering of students?Attends staff inservices and seeks appropriate educational opportunities?Assists in the supervision and monitoring of students to maintain effective learning and/or safe play/recreational environments; The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
